Trim
Apr 30, 2001

The past couple of weeks have seen completion of the proscenium (stage area around the screen) and trim work. All the doors have been installed along with case moulding, and the crown and base moulding is complete everywhere except in the theater.
We had to make some changes to the stage area due to problems fitting our equipment into the dimensions specified in the theater plans. I'm not sure why the plans were wrong in this respect since the equipment hasn't changed, but consider this an important lesson. Carefully review your plans to make sure your equipment will actually fit when the construction is done. In any case, the rework was minor and we are back on track.
Most of the trim in the theater is also done. This includes the crown moulding, door casing, and boxing the beams. This coming week we expect the base moulding and remaining casing to get done. We are also looking forward to completion of the fluted columns, window casing, projector "hush box," and equipment area.

I ordered equipment rack mounting frames for the equipment area. These should arrive this week. We plan to install the rack frames behind cabinet doors and use rack shelves to hold most of the equipment. I also orded two rack drawers for storing DVDs and video tapes right next to the electronic equipment. I am expecting the parts for my XG-1100 projector to arrive next week. I went ahead and ordered a ceiling mount for the projector so we can test fit the projector chassis in its "hush box."
We have finally settled on colors for the theater. We are going with a black and gold/tan combination. We chose black plush carpet with a tan pattern (Masland Bristol) and a tan/gold fabric for the walls. The proscenium and bottoms of the soffits will be covered with black fabric, and the recessed ceiling areas painted flat black. All trim will be painted a satin black. The fabric is an acoustically transparent material from Guilford of Maine. The pattern is called "Puzzle" and the color is "Canyon."
We still haven't found sconces or seating for the theater. Our next attempt to find sconces will be at Progressive Lighting in Alpharetta, GA. I'm still not sure what to do about seating. We checked Leather Center, but they want over $2,000 per seat. There is no way we are going to use chairs that expensive.
The remainder of the basement will get various neutral colors for the walls and an oil-based white trim paint. We are still looking for a reasonably priced berber carpet.
