My general contractor who was supposed to begin work today quit without notice citing "personal reasons." This is pretty inconvenient since we have been waiting for him to get started for two months. Next time I'll insist on a signed contract. Now the search for a new contractor begins.

I spoke to the Gwinnett County electrical inspector today to find out what kind of permit I need for moving my breaker panel. I was concerned because one electrical contractor told me I would have to upgrade my entire service and add an external disconnect if I moved the panel. This, of course, would be very expensive. Fortunately the inspector was certain that I only need a basic permit and the current service is adequate to the applicable code (c.1983). I would only need to upgrade the service if I need to increase the capacity. Since the current service is 200 amps, I'm covered.
By the way, it also looks like I will need permits for the basement rewiring, structural changes (beam installation), and plumbing work. I suppose I will get the permits despite the hassle.
