Insulation
Apr 6, 2001

Finally I have pictures of the work to date. These pictures show the completed framing in most areas:
Theater: Front Left Front Center Front Right Back Right Back Left Equipment Rack Projector Location LCD Projector Location
Hallway: Wiring Panel Backside Stair Upper Stair Lower
Other: HVAC Framed Wiring Panel Bedroom Bathroom Speaker Wire Bundle Low Voltage Mess
The insulation was completed last night and the drywall installation begins today. Over the past week, Steve has done some final framing and I finished up all the low voltage wiring. I believe this completes all the wiring I intend to do in the house. In all I have used 2000 feet of RG-6, 3000 feet of Cat-5, 1000 feet of shielded Cat-5, and 1000 feet of speaker wire. In retrospect, that seems like a lot.
Just for the record, we used blown-in insulation where possible and bats everywhere else. Apparently blown-in insulation is much better when you can use it since it fills all gaps, but it can only be used to fill ordinary 2x4 framing gaps. The theater got R-30 sound control all around, including the ceiling, and the rest of the basement got R-19. The insulation guys insulated pretty much every wall in the basement, including interior walls, to provide for better sound control.

I also bought a new X-10 capable switch made by Lightolier. It is part of their Compose PLC line of switches which are X-10 compatible although they are not advertised as such. This is a full two-way (X-10) dimmer switch very similar to the SwitchLinc products, but generally reputed to have better firmware and reliability. If my evaluation of this switch goes well, I may use a set of these to control the theater lighting rather than something like a (much more expensive) Lutron Grafik Eye. You can find more information on these switches as Worthington Solutions.
